Australia won the toss and opted to bat

Australia started batting on the first day with a good start of scoring 112 runs for first wicket in 35.2 overs losing wicket of Aaron Finch by leg before. Fifth wicket partnership of 84 runs between Shaun Marsh (45 runs in 98 balls) & Travis Head (58 runs in 80 balls) was the best one for Australia in their first innings with Shaun Marsh losing his wicket to Hanuma Vihari giving catch to Rahane in 76.6 overs. Travis Head’s wicket was caught by Shami in Ishant’s 82.1 overs when the score was 251/6 for Australia. Tim Paine (38 runs in 89 balls) and & Pat Cummins were on the crease for Australia on the end of the first day. On the start of second day, they played for 15 overs until Pat Cummins was bowled by Umesh scoring 19 runs in 66 balls in 104.6 overs. Tim Paine lost his wicket the very next over with remaining batsmen scoring less in single digit ending Australia’s first with a total of 326/10 in 108.3 overs in this Australia vs India Second Test Match (2018 – 2019).

Indian Bowling Department used six bowlers against Australia in which four bowlers except Murali Vijay & Mohammed Shami others picked wickets with Ishant picking 4 wickets in his credit and other three picking 2 wickets each. India started batting on the second day losing early wickets of Murali Vijay (duck out) 6/1 in 2.6 overs & Lokesh Rahul in 5.1 overs for 2 runs. When Captain Virat Kohli joined Cheteshwar Pujara (24 runs in 103 balls) for third wicket and this partnership scored 74 runs when Pujara was caught by Tim Paine in Mitchell Starc’s over. Ajinkya Rahane (51 runs in 105 balls with six 4s and a six) joined Kohli for fourth wicket and scored 91 runs together with Kohli and lost his wicket at the end of second day to Nathan Lyon being caught by Tim Paine. Virat Kohli played a captain’s knock of 123 runs in 257 balls with 13 4s and a six in the first innings for India contributing to total score of 283 runs in 105.5 overs losing 10 wickets. Rishabh Pant made a good 36 runs in 50 balls in the end of first innings for India getting out as ninth wicket 279/9 in 105.1 overs.  India scored 283 runs losing 10 wickets in 106 overs in this first innings of Australia vs India Second Test Match (2018 – 2019).

Australia used four bowlers in restricting Indian batsmen in their first innings with every bowler yielding wicket. Nathan Lyon picked 5 wickets with Starc & Hazlewood picked 2 wickets each. Pat Cummins picked the very important wicket of Indian Captain Virat Kohli. Tim Paine displayed remarkable performance in the field by taking four catches helping bowlers to get wickets in this Australia vs India Second Test Match (2018 – 2019).

Australia started their second innings on the third day with a goal of making a good target for India to score in their second innings. Final innings of this test match for India with a target to reach of 287 runs was started on the fourth day December 17, 2018. India lost their first couple of wickets earlier of Lokesh Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara earlier in first and fourth over as 13/2. Murali Vijay (20 runs in 67 balls) & Virat Kohli (17 runs in 40 balls) lost their wickets to Nathan Lyon together scored 35 runs in 191 overs. Ajinkya Rahane scored 30 runs in 47 balls with two 4s and a six and got out caught by Travis Head in the bowling of Josh Hazelwood. Hanuma Vihari (24 runs in 58 balls) & Rishabh Pant (9 runs in 19 balls) were on crease in the end of fourth day. India scored 112 runs losing 5 wickets in 41 overs.

India entered the final day with 5 wickets in hand and ought to score 175 runs to win the contest.  Hanuma Vihari (28 runs in 78 balls) got out in 46.6 overs scoring 28 runs for his credit in 75 balls when the score was 119/6 caught by Marcus Harris in Mitchell Starc’s bowling.  Rishabh Pant (30 runs in 61 balls) was able to manage up until 54th over for 7th wicket gave a catch to Handscomb in Nathan Lyon’s over with total score of 137/7. The rest three wickets fell in the next two overs. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins easily vanished the tailenders with Umesh Yadav scoring 2 runs and Ishant & Bumrah got out without scoring.

Australian Bowling Department used four bowlers in restricting India from reaching their target. Starc picked wicket of Hanuma Vihari’s wicket in 47th over and Nathan Lyon got Pant’s wicket in 54th over. Pat Cummins picked the last 2 wickets in the last over. In final overs, Starc and Cummins both caught in their bowling wickets of Umesh Yadav & Jasprit Bumrah respectively to end Indian innings.   Starc & Lyon picked 3 wickets each and Hazlewood & Cummins picked 2 wickets respectively.
