New Zealand arrived in confidence to bat for first innings of New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) Third One Day International with first wicket of Martin Guptill in third over caught by Kusal Mendis in Malinga’s bowling scoring 2 runs as 16/1. Second wicket fell in 4.4 overs of Colin Munro (21 runs in 14 balls) as 31/2. Third wicket partnership of 116 runs between Kane Williamson (55 runs in 65 balls with six 4s and a six) & Ross Taylor (137 runs in 131 balls with nine 4s and four 6s). Kane Williamson got out in 27th over caught by Dhananjaya de Silva for Lakshan Sandakan. Henry Nicholls joined Taylor for fourth wicket and remained not out till end scoring 124 runs in 80 balls with 12 4s and three 6s individually in reaching the remarkable total score of 364 runs in 50 overs losing four wickets.

Sri Lanka again used seven bowlers in restricting New Zealand from scoring big, but unsuccessful in doing so. Out of four wickets, Lasith Malinga picked 3 wickets and Lakshan Sandakan picked the remaining wicket of Kane Williamson.

Sri Lanka started batting in reply for the target of 365 runs in 50 overs in the latter session of this New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) Third One Day International. Sri Lanka had a fair first wicket of partnership of Dhananjaya de Silva (36 runs in 29 balls with five 4s and a six) in 9th over with total of 66/1. Second wicket Niroshan Dickwella was fell in 15th over with him scoring 46 runs in 37 balls with three 4s and two 6s and total 107/2. Kusal Perera arrived in ninth over and played until 23rd over scoring 43 runs in 49 balls with five 5s and a six. Thisara Perera again displayed spectacular batting skill in this series in this innings scoring 80 runs in 63 balls with seven 4s and three 6s got out caught by Guptill for Lockie Ferguson. Danushka Gunathilaka played in the latter for part of this innings and scored 31 runs in 52 balls. Sri Lankan failed to reach the target and scored 249 runs losing 10 wickets in 41.4 overs.

New Zealand bowlers made a successful restriction in holding Sri Lanka to not reach the target. Lockie Ferguson (4 wickets), Ish Sodhi (3 wickets), & Tim Southee & James Neesham (each 1 wicket). Ferguson picked important wickets of both Perera’s, Gunathilaka, and Chameera. Southee & Neesham picked up wickets of both opening batsmen. Ish Sodhi did the remaining job for New Zealand.
