New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat.

New Zealand’s openers started to bat for this first innings of New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) Second One Day International with first wicket of Martin Guptill in fifth over caught by Dickwella in Malinga’s bowling scoring 13 runs with first wicket partnership of 34 runs. Kane Williamson just scored single run getting out caught by Sandakan for Nuwan Pradeep. Ross Taylor (90 runs in 105 balls with four 4s and a six) joined Colin Munro (87 runs in 77 balls with 12 4s and two 6s) for third wicket partnership of 111 runs, which is big one with total score 319 runs losing 7 wickets in 50 overs. James Neesham scored 64 runs in the latter part of their innings adding to total with five 4s and three 6s. Henry Nicholls (32 runs in 38 balls) & Tim Seifert (22 runs in 17 runs with a four and six) also made a little contribution to their total.

Sri Lanka again used seven bowlers in restricting New Zealand from scoring big. Lasith Malinga picked 2 wickets and Nuwan Pradeep picked a single wicket. All three important Ross Taylor, Colin Munro, & James Neesham’s wickets were run out with Tim Seifert also getting run out.

Sri Lanka started batting in reply for the target of 320 runs in 50 overs in the latter session of this New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) Second One Day International. Sri Lanka lost first wicket of Niroshan Dickwella in fourth over with 28/1 scoring just 9 runs individually. Kusal Mendis joined Danushka Gunathilaka for third wicket in 14th over and played until 22.1 overs scoring an individual 20 runs raising the total to 112/3. Opening batsman Gunathilaka got out as fourth wicket in 116 runs caught by Seifert for Neesham scoring 71 runs individually. Thisara Perera displayed amazing devastating batting skill for Sri Lanka to reach their target scoring 140 runs with eight 4s and 13 6s. Rest of Sri Lankan batsmen displayed poor batting getting all out for 298 runs in 46.2 overs.

New Zealand had been successful in restricting Sri Lanka from reaching their target using six bowlers. Other than Kane Williamson all others got wicket. Trent Boult & Tim Southee each picked a wicket, Matt Henry & James Neesham got 2 wickets, and Ish Sodhi picked 3 wickets with important wicket of Thisara Perera caught by Boult for Matt Henry.
