Sri Lanka started batting on the first day and lost first three wickets 4 overs Danushka Gunathilaka (1 run in 9 balls in 1.6 overs), Dhananjaya de Silva (1 run in 7 balls in 3.2 overs), and Kusal Mendis (2 runs in 4 balls in 3.6 overs) with total score of 9. New Zealand in reply started their first innings on the second day of this contest. The first wicket of Jeet Raval fell in 22.6 overs with him scoring 43 runs in 70 balls with total score of 59 runs. Tom Latham remained not out till end of New Zealand’s first innings scoring 264 runs in 489 balls with 21 4s and a six. Kane Williamson joined him for the second wicket and scored 91 runs in 93 balls in their first innings of this New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) First Test Match. Ross Taylor (50 runs in 88 balls) & Henry Nicholls (50 runs in 101 balls) reached 50-run mark as their contribution to their team. Sri Lankan bowlers struggled a lot to restrict New Zealand players, but Lahiru Kumara (4 wickets), Dilruwan Perera (2 wickets), & Dhananjaya de Silva ( 2 wickets) were of a little success in doing so.

Sri Lanka started their second innings on the third day of this New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) First Test Match and lost their first three wickets quickly as 5/1 (Danushka Gunathilaka, 3.3 overs), (Dhananjaya de Silva, 4.5 overs) 10/2, & (Dimuth Karunaratne, 6.2) 13/3. Kusal Mendis (141 runs in 323 balls) & Angelo Matthews (120 runs in 323 balls) remained not out until the end of this contest on the fifth day. Sri Lanka scored 287 runs losing 3 wickets in 115 overs for their second innings, thus match was drawn.
