New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat.

New Zealand arrived to bat for this first innings of New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) First One Day International to set a target with Martin Guptill & Colin Munro as opening batsmen. First wicket fell in the second ball of fifth over of Malinga with Lakshan Sandakan catching Colin Munro scoring 13 runs in 14 balls with a four and a six. Kane Williamson joined Guptill for second wicket and played until 31st over getting out with individual score of 76 runs in 74 balls with six 4s. Guptill made a responsible stand until 43rd over and scored 138 runs in 139 balls with 11 4s and five 6s. Ross Taylor joined Guptill for third wicket in 31st over had a good second highest partnership of 88 runs until the fall of third wicket after second wicket patnership of 163 runs. Ross Taylor displayed a spectacular batting skill and played until 45th over scoring 54 runs in 37 balls with six 4s and two 6s. James Neesham scored a devastating 47 runs in 13 balls with six 6s not out raising the team’s total to 371 runs in 50 overs losing 7 wickets.

Sri Lankan Bowling Department used seven bowlers to restrict Kiwis, but were unsuccessful in doing so. Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep, & Thisara Perera each picked 2 wickets with Henry Nicholls getting out run out by Thisara Perera.

Sri Lanka started their batting in the latter session of this New Zealand vs Sri Lanka (2018 – 2019) First One Day International. Sri Lanka had an excellent first wicket partnership of 119 runs with Danushka Gunathilaka getting out caught by Seifert for James Neesham with individual score of 43 runs in 62 balls in 17.4 overs. Opening batsmen Niroshan Dickwella got out the next over of Neesham bowled. Kusal Perera joined Dickwella for second wicket in 18th over and got out as 7th wicket caught by Seifert in the bowling of Trent Boult. Apart from these first three batsmen rest of the team displayed poor batting getting all out for 326 runs in 49 overs.

For New Zealand other than Colin Munro, all other five bowlers got wicket. Matt Henry picked single and last wicket of Lasith Malinga. James Neesham picked 3 wickets, wickets of opening pair and Dinesh Chandimal. Boult, Ferguson, & Sodhi all picked 2 wickets each with important wicket of Kusal Perera getting out caught by Seifert for Boult.
